Who signed off on this?

A customer ordered from a well-known online retailer one of those big containers of chocolate covered nuts. While the container was fairly large, it was only made of plastic and not of the most durable quality.  Someone at the business decided that putting this plastic container of nuts in a flimsy plastic envelope and sending it out for shipment would somehow be fine.  Of course it arrived to the customer incredibly damaged, so much so that the customer didn’t even know how to begin to describe it to me.

Instead of getting the item she expected, she received a plastic shipping envelope full of chocolate covered nuts combined with pieces of the plastic container.  The plastic container had been obliterated during transit. Like an elephant sat on it and then kicked it around.  Instead of receiving a nice intact container of an unopened food product, the customer got an envelope of loose nuts with plastic sprinkles.

Who thought sending this type of package in just an envelope was a good idea?  A box would have been better.  A box with some cushioning would have also been a good idea.  But a single flimsy plastic bag to send something that was breakable was just plain idiotic.  Don’t put your organization in this kind of avoidable situation.  Think these things through.  Ask yourself, does this make sense?
